Note: if you already have a Level 3 SVQ in Stonemasonry, you do not need to undertake this unit.
SQA National Units H8WX 45 - Part of Professional Development Award (PDA) in Repair and Maintenance of Traditional Masonry (1.5 Credits)
This unit is about producing basic stonemasonry components by cutting and dressing natural, sedimentary stone and effecting different tooling styles.
Course Suitability
This unit is suitable for those
✔️ With limited experience in the construction and heritage industry who wish to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and practical skills in the production of natural stone components to given working instructions to be shaped true and square.
✔️ With a keen interest in the care and repair of traditional buildings and ideally have previous experience of working with stone.
Course Programme
The practical experience and underpinning knowledge required for this assessment is taught on our 2 Day training course Introduction to Stonemasonry where you would produce Basic Stonemasonry Components. If completed satisfactorily (ie you show an aptitude for this work),then a further course lasting up to 10 working days (this depends on your competence and time to complete the tasks) called C4 Cutting and Dressing Natural Stone will cover all of the outcomes of this unit.
Learning Outcome
On completion of this unit you will be able to:
✔️ Cut natural, sedimentary stone to a flat, tooled surface;
✔️ Cut a face on natural stone at right angles to an existing flat surface;
✔️ Cut a simple/basic moulding in natural stone; and
✔️ Produce at least two traditional surface tooling finishes.
Assessment
You will be assessed through completion of ‘closed-book’ multiple choice questions and practical tasks as described above over 5 days.
Upon successful completion, you will gain 1.5 National Unit credits at SCQF Level 5 – equivalent to National 5
